Guar is
an annual summer legume and India has a major share of around 85% of total Guar
production in the world.
Various uses of Guar Gum:
Guar Gum is cold water soluble Polysaccharide, and it has broad uses in food and
other industries. These uses depend upon the properties provided by very large molecules in various
states of hydration, mostly in solution. Guar Gum Hydrates very easily to produce aqueous
solution possessing a high viscosity at low Gum concentration.
These solutions are good emulsifiers and stabilizers because they prevent oil droplets from
coalescing. They may also have the property of interfacial binding and thereby act as true
emulsifiers. Guar Gum is also used as a suspension
stabiliser as it allows only Slow settling because of its thickening power.
Oil, Gas & Well Drilling:
Guar Gum is an essential ingredient of the MUD used while Drilling for the exploration of Oil &
Natural Gases in the presence of Guar Gum derivatives.
The mud helps to bring out the chips and keeps the drilling bit cool. It also stops
caving of formation and suspends the chips while
the drilling column is kept stationary.
Mining:
Guar Gum is used in froth floatation of potash as an auxiliary
reagent, depressing the gangue minerals which might be clay, talc or shale. It is also used as a flocculant or setting agent to
concentrate ores and tailing in the mining industry.
Foods:
The largest market for Guar Gum is the food industry. Guar Gum is used as a
thickening agent and a binder of free water in sauce, salad dressings, ice cream and many other application. Other
items using Guar Gum include...
 |
Frozen foods, cheeses
|
 |
Pie filing, icings
|
 |
Pet foods, bread improvers |
 |
Instant noodles, beverages, etc.
|
Cosmetics & Pharmaceuticals:
Guar Gum is used to thicken various cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. It is also used to
bind and to disintegrate compressed tablets and pellets. it is also used as a mild laxative.
Paper Industry:
Guar Gum along with other gums is used in the paper industry for improved sheet formation,
increased bursting strength, increased fold strength and increased finish.
Explosives:
Guar Gum is used to prevent untimely explosions in Nitroglycerine
slurry explosives.
